Old Testament (overview) - The Old Testament is the part of the Bible that was written before the time of Jesus. It tells of God creating the world, humanity rebelling against their creator and God starting the process of the rescue of humanity through the nation of Israel. It's recurrent theme of God not giving up on a people who give up on him shows us that God is merciful, loving and forgiving. It contains 39 books of different genres, including histories, books of Law, poetry and wisdom, and prophecy. Its opening words are "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1).]]
