Varanasi (also known as Benares) is the holiest Hindu city. It lies on the banks of the River Ganges (Ganga) where Hindus come to bathe themselves and wash away their sins. It is in the modern north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi has a unique culture, quite different from other places in the region.
