The station was set up in 1931 by Guglielmo Marconi with the [[Jesuit Order]] charged with its  management. During World War II and the rise of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, Vatican Radio served as a source of pro-allied and neutral news. During the war [[Pope Pius XII]] saw to it that the Vatican Radio broadcast information about Poles and [[Jew]]s were being rounded up and forced into ghettos.

Today Vatican Radio programs are offered in 47 languages, and are sent out via short waves, medium waves, FM, satellite and the internet. Programming is produced by over two hundred journalists located in 61 different countries. Vatican Radio produces broadcasting covering international news, religious celebrations, in-depth programs, and music. The current general director is Father Federico Lombardi, S.J.
