  1. He began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a pit for the winepress, built a tower, rented it out to a farmer, and went into another country.
  2. When it was time, he sent a servant to the farmer to get from the farmer his share of the fruit of the vineyard.
  3. They took him, beat him, and sent him away empty.
  4. Again, he sent another servant to them; and they threw stones at him, wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully treated.
  5. Again he sent another; and they killed him; and many others, beating some, and killing some.
  6. Therefore still having one, his beloved son, he sent him last to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
  7. But those farmers said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'
  8. They took him, killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
  9. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.
  10. Haven't you even read this Scripture: 'The stone which the builders rejected, the same was made the head of the corner.
  11. This was from the Lord, it is marvelous in our eyes'?"
  12. They tried to seize him, but they feared the multitude; for they perceived that he spoke the parable against them. They left him, and went away.
  13. They sent some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians to him, that they might trap him with words.
  14. When they had come, they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and don't defer to anyone; for you aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
  15. Shall we give, or shall we not give?" But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it."
  16. They brought it. He said to them, "Whose is this image and inscription?" They said to him, "Caesar's."
  17. Jesus answered them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." They marveled greatly at him.
  18. There came to him Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection. They asked him, saying,
  19. "Teacher, Moses wrote to us, 'If a man's brother dies, and leaves a wife behind him, and leaves no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up offspring for his brother.'
  20. There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying left no offspring.
  21. The second took her, and died, leaving no children behind him. The third likewise;
  22. and the seven took her and left no children. Last of all the woman also died.
  23. In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be of them? For the seven had her as a wife."
  24. Jesus answered them, "Isn't this because you are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God?
  25. For when they will rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
  26. But about the dead, that they are raised; haven't you read in the book of Moses, about the Bush, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?
  27. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are therefore badly mistaken."
  28. One of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together. Knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the greatest of all?"
  29. Jesus answered, "The greatest is, 'Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one:
  30. you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment.
  31. The second is like this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
  32. The scribe said to him, "Truly, teacher, you have said well that he is one, and there is none other but he,
  33. and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."
  34. When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God." No one dared ask him any question after that.
  35. Jesus responded, as he taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?
  36. For David himself said in the Holy Spirit, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet."'
  37. Therefore David himself calls him Lord, so how can he be his son?" The common people heard him gladly.
  38. In his teaching he said to them, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and to get greetings in the marketplaces,
  39. and the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts:
  40. those who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."
  41. Jesus sat down opposite the treasury, and saw how the multitude cast money into the treasury. Many who were rich cast in much.
  42. A poor widow came, and she cast in two small brass coins, which equal a quadrans coin.
  43. He called his disciples to himself, and said to them, "Most certainly I tell you, this poor widow gave more than all those who are giving into the treasury,
  44. for they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on."

  1. ויחל לדבר אליהם במשלים לאמר איש נטע כרם ויעש גדר סביבותיו ויחצב יקב ויבן מגדל ויתנהו אל כרמים וילך למרחקים׃
  2. ולמועד שלח אל הכרמים עבד לקחת מאת הכרמים מפרי הכרם׃
  3. ויחזיקו בו ויכהו וישלחהו ריקם׃
  4. ויסף לשלח אליהם עבד אחר ואתו סקלו באבנים ומחקו ראשו וישלחהו נכלם׃
  5. ויסף וישלח אחר וגם אתו הרגו וכן עשו ברבים אחרים מהם הכו ומהם הרגו׃
  6. ויהי לו עוד בן יחיד אשר אהבו וישלח גם אתו אליהם באחרנה לאמר מפני בני יגורו׃
  7. והכרמים ההם אמרו איש אל רעהו הנה זה הוא היורש לכו ונהרגהו ולנו תהיה הירשה׃
  8. ויחזיקו בו ויהרגו אותו וישליכהו אל מחוץ לכרם׃
  9. ועתה מה יעשה בעל הכרם יבוא ויאבד את הכרמים ההם ויתן את הכרם לאחרים׃
  10. הלא קראתם את הכתוב הזה אבן מאסו הבונים היתה לראש פנה׃
  11. מאת יהוה היתה זאת היא נפלאת בעינינו׃
  12. ויבקשו לתפשו וייראו מפני העם יען אשר הבינו כי עליהם דבר את המשל הזה ויעזבהו וילכו להם׃
  13. וישלחו אליו אנשים מן הפרושים ומן ההורדוסים ללכד אתו בדברו׃
  14. ויבאו ויאמרו אליו רבי ידענו כי איש אמת אתה ולא תגור מפני איש כי לא תכיר פנים כי אם באמת מורה אתה את דרך האלהים הנכון לתת מס אל הקיסר אם לא נתן׃
  15. והוא ידע את חנפתם ויאמר אליהם מה תנסוני הביאו אלי דינר ואראה׃
  16. ויביאו ויאמר אליהם של מי הצורה הזאת והמכתב אשר עליו ויאמרו אליו של הקיסר׃
  17. ויאמר ישוע אליהם את אשר לקיסר תנו לקיסר ואת אשר לאלהים תנו לאלהים ויתמהו עליו׃
  18. ויבאו אליו מן הצדוקים האמרים כי אין תחיה למתים וישאלהו לאמר׃
  19. רבי כתב לנו משה כי ימות אחי איש ועזב אשה ובנים אין לו ייבם אחיו את אשתו ויקם זרע לאחיו׃
  20. והנה שבעה אחים והראשון לקח אשה ובמותו לא השאיר אחריו זרע׃
  21. ויקח אתה השני וימת ולא הניח זרע וכן גם השלישי׃
  22. ויקחוה כל השבעה ולא השאירו אחריהם זרע ואחרי מות כלם מתה גם האשה׃
  23. ועתה בתחית המתים כשיקומו למי מהם תהיה לאשה כי לשבעה היתה לאשה׃
  24. ויאמר ישוע אליהם הלא בזאת אתם תעים באשר אינכם יודעים גם את הכתובים גם את גבורת האלהים׃
  25. כי בעת קומם מן המתים האנשים לא ישאו נשים ולא תנשאנה אך יהיו כמלאכי השמים׃
  26. ועל דבר המתים כי קום יקומו הלא קראתם בספר משה בסנה את אשר דבר אליו האלהים לאמר אנכי אלהי אברהם ואלהי יצחק ואלהי יעקב׃
  27. האלהים איננו אלהי המתים כי אם אלהי החיים לכן הרביתם לתעות׃
  28. ואחד מן הסופרים שמע אתם מתוכחים ויקרב אליהם וירא כי היטב השיבם וישאלהו מה היא הראשנה לכל המצות׃
  29. ויען ישוע וידבר אליו הראשנה לכל המצות היא שמע ישראל יהוה אלהינו יהוה אחד׃
  30. ואהבת את יהוה אלהיך בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך ובכל מדעך ובכל מאדך זאת היא המצוה הראשנה׃
  31. והשנית הדמה לה היא ואהבת לרעך כמוך ואין מצוה גדולה מאלה׃
  32. ויאמר אליו הסופר אמנם רבי יפה דברת כי אלהים אחד הוא ואין עוד מלבדו׃
  33. ולאהבה אתו בכל לבב ובכל מדע ובכל נפש ובכל מאד ולאהבה את הרע כנפשו גדולה היא מכל עלות וזבחים׃
  34. וירא ישוע כי ענה בדעת ויאמר אליו לא רחוק אתה ממלכות האלהים ואיש לא ערב עוד את לבו לשאל אותו שאלה׃
  35. ויען ישוע בלמדו במקדש ויאמר איך יאמרו הסופרים כי המשיח הוא בן דוד׃
  36. והוא דוד אמר ברוח הקדש נאם יהוה לאדני שב לימיני עד אשית איביך הדם לרגליך׃
  37. הנה דוד בעצמו קרא לו אדון ואיך הוא בנו ויאהב רב העם לשמע אתו׃
  38. ויאמר אליהם בלמד אתם השמרו מן הסופרים האהבים להתהלך עטופי טלית ואת שאלות שלומם בשוקים׃
  39. ואת מושבי הראש בבתי כנסיות ואת מסבות הראש בסעודות׃
  40. הבלעים את בתי האלמנות ומאריכים בתפלה למראה עינים המה משפט על יתר יקחו׃
  41. וישוע ישב ממול ארון האוצר והוא ראה את העם משליכים מעות לארון האוצר ועשירים רבים נתנו הרבה׃
  42. ותבא אלמנה עניה ותשלך שתי פרוטות אשר הן רבע אסר׃
  43. ויקרא אל תלמידיו ויאמר אליהם אמן אמר אני לכם כי האלמנה העניה הזאת נתנה יותר מכל הנתנים אל ארון האוצר׃
  44. כי כלם נתנו מן העדף שלהם והיא ממחסרה נתנה כל אשר לה את כל רכושה׃

  1. και ηρξατο αυτοις εν παραβολαις λαλειν αμπελωνα ανθρωπος εφυτευσεν και περιεθηκεν φραγμον και ωρυξεν υποληνιον και ωκοδομησεν πυργον και εξεδετο αυτον γεωργοις και απεδημησεν
  2. και απεστειλεν προς τους γεωργους τω καιρω δουλον ινα παρα των γεωργων λαβη απο των καρπων του αμπελωνος
  3. και λαβοντες αυτον εδειραν και απεστειλαν κενον
  4. και παλιν απεστειλεν προς αυτους αλλον δουλον κακεινον εκεφαλιωσαν και ητιμασαν
  5. και αλλον απεστειλεν κακεινον απεκτειναν και πολλους αλλους ους μεν δεροντες ους δε αποκτεννοντες
  6. ετι ενα ειχεν υιον αγαπητον απεστειλεν αυτον εσχατον προς αυτους λεγων οτι εντραπησονται τον υιον μου
  7. εκεινοι δε οι γεωργοι προς εαυτους ειπαν οτι ουτος εστιν ο κληρονομος δευτε αποκτεινωμεν αυτον και ημων εσται η κληρονομια
  8. και λαβοντες απεκτειναν αυτον και εξεβαλον αυτον εξω του αμπελωνος
  9. τι ποιησει ο κυριος του αμπελωνος ελευσεται και απολεσει τους γεωργους και δωσει τον αμπελωνα αλλοις
  10. ουδε την γραφην ταυτην ανεγνωτε λιθον ον απεδοκιμασαν οι οικοδομουντες ουτος εγενηθη εις κεφαλην γωνιας
  11. παρα κυριου εγενετο αυτη και εστιν θαυμαστη εν οφθαλμοις ημων
  12. και εζητουν αυτον κρατησαι και εφοβηθησαν τον οχλον εγνωσαν γαρ οτι προς αυτους την παραβολην ειπεν και αφεντες αυτον απηλθον
  13. και αποστελλουσιν προς αυτον τινας των φαρισαιων και των ηρωδιανων ινα αυτον αγρευσωσιν λογω
  14. και ελθοντες λεγουσιν αυτω διδασκαλε οιδαμεν οτι αληθης ει και ου μελει σοι περι ουδενος ου γαρ βλεπεις εις προσωπον ανθρωπων αλλ επ αληθειας την οδον του θεου διδασκεις εξεστιν δουναι κηνσον καισαρι η ου
  15. δωμεν η μη δωμεν ο δε ειδως αυτων την υποκρισιν ειπεν αυτοις τι με πειραζετε φερετε μοι δηναριον ινα ιδω
  16. οι δε ηνεγκαν και λεγει αυτοις τινος η εικων αυτη και η επιγραφη οι δε ειπαν αυτω καισαρος
  17. ο δε ιησους ειπεν τα καισαρος αποδοτε καισαρι και τα του θεου τω θεω και εξεθαυμαζον επ αυτω
  18. και ερχονται σαδδουκαιοι προς αυτον οιτινες λεγουσιν αναστασιν μη ειναι και επηρωτων αυτον λεγοντες
  19. διδασκαλε μωυσης εγραψεν ημιν οτι εαν τινος αδελφος αποθανη και καταλιπη γυναικα και μη αφη τεκνον ινα λαβη ο αδελφος αυτου την γυναικα και εξαναστηση σπερμα τω αδελφω αυτου
  20. επτα αδελφοι ησαν και ο πρωτος ελαβεν γυναικα και αποθνησκων ουκ αφηκεν σπερμα
  21. και ο δευτερος ελαβεν αυτην και απεθανεν μη καταλιπων σπερμα και ο τριτος ωσαυτως
  22. και οι επτα ουκ αφηκαν σπερμα εσχατον παντων και η γυνη απεθανεν
  23. εν τη αναστασει τινος αυτων εσται γυνη οι γαρ επτα εσχον αυτην γυναικα
  24. εφη αυτοις ο ιησους ου δια τουτο πλανασθε μη ειδοτες τας γραφας μηδε την δυναμιν του θεου
  25. οταν γαρ εκ νεκρων αναστωσιν ουτε γαμουσιν ουτε γαμιζονται αλλ εισιν ως αγγελοι εν τοις ουρανοις
  26. περι δε των νεκρων οτι εγειρονται ουκ ανεγνωτε εν τη βιβλω μωυσεως επι του βατου πως ειπεν αυτω ο θεος λεγων εγω ο θεος αβρααμ και θεος ισαακ και θεος ιακωβ
  27. ουκ εστιν θεος νεκρων αλλα ζωντων πολυ πλανασθε
  28. και προσελθων εις των γραμματεων ακουσας αυτων συζητουντων οτι καλως απεκριθη αυτοις επηρωτησεν αυτον ποια εστιν εντολη πρωτη παντων
  29. απεκριθη ο ιησους οτι πρωτη εστιν ακουε ισραηλ κυριος ο θεος ημων κυριος εις εστιν
  30. και αγαπησεις κυριον τον θεον σου εξ ολης καρδιας σου και εξ ολης της ψυχης σου και εξ ολης της διανοιας σου και εξ ολης της ισχυος σου
  31. δευτερα αυτη αγαπησεις τον πλησιον σου ως σεαυτον μειζων τουτων αλλη εντολη ουκ εστιν

  33. και το αγαπαν αυτον εξ ολης καρδιας και εξ ολης της συνεσεως και εξ ολης της ισχυος και το αγαπαν τον πλησιον ως εαυτον περισσοτερον εστιν παντων των ολοκαυτωματων και θυσιων
  34. και ο ιησους ιδων οτι νουνεχως απεκριθη ειπεν αυτω ου μακραν απο της βασιλειας του θεου και ουδεις ουκετι ετολμα αυτον επερωτησαι
  35. και αποκριθεις ο ιησους ελεγεν διδασκων εν τω ιερω πως λεγουσιν οι γραμματεις οτι ο χριστος υιος δαυιδ εστιν
  36. αυτος δαυιδ ειπεν εν τω πνευματι τω αγιω ειπεν κυριος τω κυριω μου καθου εκ δεξιων μου εως αν θω τους εχθρους σου υποκατω των ποδων σου
  37. αυτος δαυιδ λεγει αυτον κυριον και ποθεν αυτου εστιν υιος και πολυς οχλος ηκουεν αυτου ηδεως
  38. και εν τη διδαχη αυτου ελεγεν βλεπετε απο των γραμματεων των θελοντων εν στολαις περιπατειν και ασπασμους εν ταις αγοραις
  39. και πρωτοκαθεδριας εν ταις συναγωγαις και πρωτοκλισιας εν τοις δειπνοις
  40. οι κατεσθιοντες τας οικιας των χηρων και προφασει μακρα προσευχομενοι ουτοι λημψονται περισσοτερον κριμα
  41. και καθισας κατεναντι του γαζοφυλακιου εθεωρει πως ο οχλος βαλλει χαλκον εις το γαζοφυλακιον και πολλοι πλουσιοι εβαλλον πολλα
  42. και ελθουσα μια χηρα πτωχη εβαλεν λεπτα δυο ο εστιν κοδραντης
  43. και προσκαλεσαμενος τους μαθητας αυτου ειπεν αυτοις αμην λεγω υμιν οτι η χηρα αυτη η πτωχη πλειον παντων εβαλεν των βαλλοντων εις το γαζοφυλακιον
  44. παντες γαρ εκ του περισσευοντος αυτοις εβαλον αυτη δε εκ της υστερησεως αυτης παντα οσα ειχεν εβαλεν ολον τον βιον αυτης

  1. Et cœpit illis in parabolis loqui : Vineam pastinavit homo, et circumdedit sepem, et fodit lacum, et ædificavit turrim, et locavit eam agricolis, et peregre profectus est.
  2. Et misit ad agricolas in tempore servum ut ab agricolis acciperet de fructu vineæ.
  3. Qui apprehensum eum ceciderunt, et dimiserunt vacuum.
  4. Et iterum misit ad illos alium servum : et illum in capite vulneraverunt, et contumeliis affecerunt.
  5. Et rursum alium misit, et illum occiderunt : et plures alios : quosdam cædentes, alios vero occidentes.
  6. Adhuc ergo unum habens filium carissimum, et illum misit ad eos novissimum, dicens : Quia reverebuntur filium meum.
  7. Coloni autem dixerunt ad invicem : Hic est hæres : venite, occidamus eum : et nostra erit hæreditas.
  8. Et apprehendentes eum, occiderunt : et ejecerunt extra vineam.
  9. Quid ergo faciet dominus vineæ ? Veniet, et perdet colonos, et dabit vineam aliis.
  10. Nec scripturam hanc legistis : Lapidem quem reprobaverunt ædificantes, hic factus est in caput anguli :
  11. a Domino factum est istud, et est mirabile in oculis nostris ?
  12. Et quærebant eum tenere : et timuerunt turbam : cognoverunt enim quoniam ad eos parabolam hanc dixerit. Et relicto eo abierunt.
  13. Et mittunt ad eum quosdam ex pharisæis, et herodianis, ut eum caperent in verbo.
  14. Qui venientes dicunt ei : Magister, scimus quia verax es, et non curas quemquam : nec enim vides in faciem hominum, sed in veritate viam Dei doces. Licet dari tributum Cæsari, an non dabimus ?
  15. Qui sciens versutiam illorum, ait illos : Quid me tentatis ? afferte mihi denarium ut videam.
  16. At illi attulerunt ei. Et ait illis : Cujus est imago hæc, et inscriptio ? Dicunt ei : Cæsaris.
  17. Respondens autem Jesus dixit illis : Reddite igitur quæ sunt Cæsaris, Cæsari : et quæ sunt Dei, Deo. Et mirabantur super eo.
  18. Et venerunt ad eum sadducæi, qui dicunt resurrectionem non esse : et interrogabant eum, dicentes :
  19. Magister, Moyses nobis scripsit, ut si cujus frater mortuus fuerit, et dimiserit uxorem, et filios non reliquerit, accipiat frater ejus uxorem ipsius, et resuscitet semen fratri suo.
  20. Septem ergo fratres erant : et primus accepit uxorem, et mortuus est non relicto semine.
  21. Et secundus accepit eam, et mortuus est : et nec iste reliquit semen. Et tertius similiter.
  22. Et acceperunt eam similiter septem : et non reliquerunt semen. Novissima omnium defuncta est et mulier.
  23. In resurrectione ergo cum resurrexerint, cujus de his erit uxor ? septem enim habuerunt eam uxorem.
  24. Et respondens Jesus, ait illis : Nonne ideo erratis, non scientes Scripturas, neque virtutem Dei ?
  25. Cum enim a mortuis resurrexerint, neque nubent, neque nubentur, sed sunt sicut angeli in cælis.
  26. De mortuis autem quod resurgant, non legistis in libro Moysi, super rubum, quomodo dixerit illi Deus, inquiens : Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob ?
  27. Non est Deus mortuorum, sed vivorum. Vos ergo multum erratis.
  28. Et accessit unus de scribis, qui audierat illos conquirentes, et videns quoniam bene illis responderit, interrogavit eum quod esset primum omnium mandatum.
  29. Jesus autem respondit ei : Quia primum omnium mandatum est : Audi Israël, Dominus Deus tuus, Deus unus est :
  30. et diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex tota corde tuo, et ex tota anima tua, et ex tota mente tua, et ex tota virtute tua. Hoc est primum mandatum.
  31. Secundum autem simile est illi : Diliges proximum tuum tamquam teipsum. Majus horum aliud mandatum non est.
  32. Et ait illi scriba : Bene, Magister, in veritate dixisti, quia unus est Deus, et non est alius præter eum.
  33. Et ut diligatur ex toto corde, et ex toto intellectu, et ex tota anima, et ex tota fortitudine, et diligere proximum tamquam seipsum, majus est omnibus holocautomatibus, et sacrificiis.
  34. Jesus autem videns quod sapienter respondisset, dixit illi : Non es longe a regno Dei. Et nemo jam audebat eum interrogare.
  35. Et respondens Jesus dicebat, docens in templo : Quomodo dicunt scribæ Christum filium esse David ?
  36. Ipse enim David dicit in Spiritu Sancto : Dixit Dominus Domino meo : Sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum.
  37. Ipse ergo David dicit eum Dominum, et unde est filius ejus ? Et multa turba eum libenter audivit.
  38. Et dicebat eis in doctrina sua : Cavete a scribis, qui volunt in stolis ambulare, et salutari in foro,
  39. et in primis cathedris sedere in synagogis, et primos discubitus in cœnis :
  40. qui devorant domos viduarum sub obtentu prolixæ orationis : hi accipient prolixius judicium.
  41. Et sedens Jesus contra gazophylacium, aspiciebat quomodo turba jactaret æs in gazophylacium, et multi divites jactabant multa.
  42. Cum venisset autem vidua una pauper, misit duo minuta, quod est quadrans,
  43. et convocans discipulos suos, ait illis : Amen dico vobis, quoniam vidua hæc pauper plus omnibus misit, qui miserunt in gazophylacium.
  44. Omnes enim ex eo, quod abundabat illis, miserunt : hæc vero de penuria sua omnia quæ habuit misit totum victum suum.

  1. And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.
  2. And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
  3. And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.
  4. And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.
  5. And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.
  6. Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.
  7. But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.
  8. And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
  9. What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.
  10. And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:
  11. This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
  12. And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.
  13. And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words.
  14. And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
  15. Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.
  16. And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's.
  17. And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.
  18. Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,
  19. Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
  20. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.
  21. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise.
  22. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.
  23. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.
  24. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?
  25. For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.
  26. And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
  27. He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.
  28. And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
  29. And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
  30. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
  31. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
  32. And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
  33. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
  34. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
  35. And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?
  36. For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
  37. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.
  38. And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
  39. And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
  40. Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.
  41. And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
  42. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
  43. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
  44. For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
