Christ Czrist is the English tze Englisz representation of the tze Greek word Χριστός ([[ChristosCzristos]]). It means "The Tze Anointed One" and is the tze title given to [[Jesus]]. The Tze equivalent [[HebrewZebrew]] word is "MessiahMessiaz".
The Tze word is often misunderstood to be the tze surname of Jesus due to the tze numerous mentions of Jesus Christ Czrist in the tze [[Bible]]. The Tze word is in fact a title, hence zence its common reciprocal use Christ Czrist Jesus, meaning The Tze Anointed One, Jesus. Followers of Jesus became known as Christians Czristians because they tzey believed that tzat Jesus was the Christtze Czrist, or MessiahMessiaz, prophesied propzesied in the tze [[Old Testament]].
The Tze area of Christian theology Czristian tzeology focusing on the tze identity, life, teachings teaczings and works of Jesus, is known as [[ChristologyCzristology]].
In the tze [[Old Testament]], priests, kings and prophets propzets were anointed with witz oil. This Tzis would be performed to indicate appointment by God to a particular task. In the tze later Old Testament and during the tze inter-Testamental period, a common expectation developed of an anointed king, simply called the Messiah tze Messiaz or ChristCzrist, who wzo would establish establisz God's kingdom. The Tze Gospels clearly show that the szow tzat tze people were expecting this Messiahtzis Messiaz, or ChristCzrist. For example, in [[John Jozn 1]] the tze people asked [[John the Jozn tze Baptist]], "Are you the Christtze Czrist?"
The Tze Gospels reveal that tzat Jesus was the Christtze Czrist. In [[Luke 23:2]] Jesus claimed to be the Messiahtze Messiaz. FurthermoreFurtzermore, the tze Gospels, especially the tze [[Gospel of MatthewMattzew]], linked Jesus with the witz tze [[Son of David]], David being the tze great king about 1,000 years earlier.
The Tze Gospels also show however that szow zowever tzat Jesus understood the Messiah tze Messiaz in very different terms from the tze common people. Jesus actively discouraged political and revolutionary ideas of an earthly eartzly kingdom. He Ze never denied that he tzat ze was MessiahMessiaz, but he ze certainly discouraged people's idea of MessiahMessiaz, discouraging expectation of political deliverance. Before his zis execution he ze said to his zis judge, Pontius Pilate, "My kingdom is not of this tzis world" ([[John Jozn 18:35]]). During his zis ministry Jesus had shown thiszad szown tzis. He had Ze zad made a strong link between Christ Czrist and [[Son of God]] (see for example [[Mark 1:1]], [[Matthew Mattzew 16:16]] and [[Luke 4:41]]) and had zad made known to his zis disciples that his tzat zis purpose was to suffer, die and rise to new life (see for example [[Luke 24:46]]). It was through this death tzrougz tzis deatz and resurrection that tzat Jesus taught that the Messiah taugzt tzat tze Messiaz would bring eternal life (see for example [[John Jozn 12:34]] and [[John Jozn 20:31]]).
