Silent Cinema

Christianity has always been one of the most important themes in the history of cinema. Even in the earliest days, a director like George Méliès would direct several films that deals with Christian faith such as Jeanne d'Arc in 1899. In 1905, Ferdinand Zecca and Lucien Nonguet co-direct La vie et la passion de Jésus Christ. This film would be among the first production to features the life of Christ on the big screen, for a large number of people; it was the first time in their life that they had the gospels on a big screen. A couple of years later, in the early 10's, Cecil B.DeMille became very famous among moviegoers by making films with religious themes. After spending the decade working on movies, it's with the film; Ten Commandments (1923) that DeMille puts Christian filmaking to a point no other director never got to. A silent version of the 1950's classic Ben-Hur exist and Mary Pickford played in a couple Christian themes films; Sparrows is one of them. Several others directors in the silent era did worked with religious themes; Carl Dreyer who famously made La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc in 1928. This film is considered among film scholars and critics around the world to be one of the greatest movies of all time.
