The Council of Trent was the 19th ecumenical council of the Catholic Church which waged on for 18-years during which 25 sessions, starting on December 13, 1545 and ending on December 4, 1563. The council was prompted by the Protestant Reformation which began in 1517.

The council was held to condemn heresies that the Catholic Church accused the Protestants of committing. One notable verdict of the Council of Trent was that it added 7 controversial books, and added onto 2 other books to the Catholic version of the Bible, more specifically the Old Testament.

It was the last council until the First Vatican Council in 1869.
