Job 41 Text (WEB) "Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook, or press down his tongue with a cord? Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce his jaw through with a hook? Will he make many petitions to you, or will he speak soft words to you? Will he make a covenant with you, that you should take him for a servant forever? Will you play with him as with a bird? Or will you bind him for your girls? Will traders barter for him? Will they part him among the merchants? Can you fill his skin with barbed irons, or his head with fish spears? Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more. Behold, the hope of him is in vain. Won't one be cast down even at the sight of him? None is so fierce that he dare stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine. "I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, nor his mighty strength, nor his goodly frame. Who can strip off his outer garment? Who shall come within his jaws? Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror. Strong scales are his pride, shut up together with a close seal. One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. They are joined one to another. They stick together, so that they can't be pulled apart. His sneezing flashes out light. His eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning torches. Sparks of fire leap forth. Out of his nostrils a smoke goes, as of a boiling pot over a fire of reeds. His breath kindles coals. A flame goes forth from his mouth. There is strength in his neck. Terror dances before him. The flakes of his flesh are joined together. They are firm on him. They can't be moved. His heart is as firm as a stone, yes, firm as the lower millstone. When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid. They retreat before his thrashing. If one attacks him with the sword, it can't prevail; nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft. He counts iron as straw; and brass as rotten wood. The arrow can't make him flee. Sling stones are like chaff to him. Clubs are counted as stubble. He laughs at the rushing of the javelin. His undersides are like sharp potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. He makes the deep to boil like a pot. He makes the sea like a pot of ointment. He makes a path shine after him. One would think the deep had white hair. On earth there is not his equal, that is made without fear. He sees everything that is high. He is king over all the sons of pride."
Job 41 Text (Hebrew) תמשך לויתן בחכה ובחבל תשקיע לשנו׃ התשים אגמון באפו ובחוח תקוב לחיו׃ הירבה אליך תחנונים אם־ידבר אליך רכות׃ היכרת ברית עמך תקחנו לעבד עולם׃ התשחק־בו כצפור ותקשרנו לנערותיך׃ יכרו עליו חברים יחצוהו בין כנענים׃ התמלא בשכות עורו ובצלצל דגים ראשו׃ שים־עליו כפך זכר מלחמה אל־תוסף׃ הן־תחלתו נכזבה הגם אל־מראיו יטל׃ לא־אכזר כי יעורנו ומי הוא לפני יתיצב׃ מי הקדימני ואשלם תחת כל־השמים לי־הוא׃ ־אחריש בדיו ודבר־גבורות וחין ערכו׃ מי־גלה פני לבושו בכפל רסנו מי יבוא׃ דלתי פניו מי פתח סביבות שניו אימה׃ גאוה אפיקי מגנים סגור חותם צר׃ אחד באחד יגשו ורוח לא־יבוא ביניהם׃ איש־באחיהו ידבקו יתלכדו ולא יתפרדו׃ עטישתיו תהל אור ועיניו כעפעפי־שחר׃ מפיו לפידים יהלכו כידודי אש יתמלטו׃ מנחיריו יצא עשן כדוד נפוח ואגמן׃ נפשו גחלים תלהט ולהב מפיו יצא׃ בצוארו ילין עז ולפניו תדוץ דאבה׃ מפלי בשרו דבקו יצוק עליו בל־ימוט׃ לבו יצוק כמו־אבן ויצוק כפלח תחתית׃ משתו יגורו אלים משברים יתחטאו׃ משיגהו חרב בלי תקום חנית מסע ושריה׃ יחשב לתבן ברזל לעץ רקבון נחושה׃ לא־יבריחנו בן־קשת לקש נהפכו־לו אבני־קלע׃ כקש נחשבו תותח וישחק לרעש כידון׃ תחתיו חדודי חרש ירפד חרוץ עלי־טיט׃ ירתיח כסיר מצולה ים ישים כמרקחה׃ אחריו יאיר נתיב יחשב תהום לשיבה׃ אין־על־עפר משלו העשו לבלי־חת׃ את־כל־גבה יראה הוא מלך על־כל־בני־שחץ׃ ס
Job 41 Text (Greek) αξεις δε δρακοντα εν αγκιστρω περιθησεις δε φορβεαν περι ρινα ει δησεις κρικον εν τω μυκτηρι αυτου ψελιω δε τρυπησεις το χειλος λαλησει δε σοι δεησει ικετηρια θησεται δε διαθηκην μετα σου λημψη δε αυτον δουλον παιξη δε εν αυτω ωσπερ ορνεω η δησεις αυτον ωσπερ στρουθιον ενσιτουνται δε εν αυτω εθνη μεριτευονται δε αυτον φοινικων παν δε πλωτον συνελθον ου μη ενεγκωσιν βυρσαν μιαν ουρας αυτου και εν πλοιοις αλιεων κεφαλην επιθησεις δε αυτω χειρα μνησθεις πολεμον τον γινομενον εν σωματι αυτου και μηκετι ουχ εορακας αυτον ουδε επι τοις λεγομενοις ου δεδοικας οτι ητοιμασται μοι τις γαρ εστιν ο εμοι η τις αντιστησεται μοι και υπομενει ει πασα η υπ' ουρανον εμη ου σιωπησομαι δι' αυτον και λογον δυναμεως ελεησει τον ισον τις αποκαλυψει προσωπον ενδυσεως αυτου εις δε πτυξιν θωρακος αυτου τις αν πυλας προσωπου αυτου τις ανοιξει κυκλω οδοντων αυτου τα εγκατα αυτου ασπιδες χαλκειαι συνδεσμος δε αυτου ωσπερ σμιριτης εις του ενος κολλωνται πνευμα δε ου μη διελθη ανηρ τω αδελφω αυτου προσκολληθησεται συνεχονται και ου μη εν πταρμω αυτου επιφαυσκεται φεγγος οι δε οφθαλμοι αυτου ειδος εκ στοματος αυτου εκπορευονται λαμπαδες καιομεναι και διαρριπτουνται εσχαραι εκ μυκτηρων αυτου εκπορευεται καπνος καμινου καιομενης πυρι η ψυχη αυτου ανθρακες φλοξ δε εκ στοματος αυτου εν δε τραχηλω αυτου αυλιζεται δυναμις εμπροσθεν αυτου τρεχει σαρκες δε σωματος αυτου κεκολληνται καταχεει επ' αυτον ου η καρδια αυτου πεπηγεν ως λιθος εστηκεν δε ωσπερ ακμων στραφεντος δε αυτου φοβος θηριοις τετραποσιν επι γης εαν συναντησωσιν αυτω λογχαι ουδεν μη ποιησωσιν δορυ επηρμενον και ηγηται μεν γαρ σιδηρον αχυρα χαλκον δε ωσπερ ξυλον ου μη τρωση αυτον τοξον χαλκειον ηγηται μεν πετροβολον ως καλαμη ελογισθησαν σφυραι καταγελα δε σεισμου η στρωμνη αυτου οβελισκοι οξεις πας δε χρυσος θαλασσης υπ' αυτον ωσπερ πηλος αναζει την αβυσσον ωσπερ χαλκειον ηγηται δε την θαλασσαν ωσπερ τον δε ταρταρον της αβυσσου ωσπερ αιχμαλωτον ελογισατο αβυσσον εις ουκ εστιν ουδεν επι της γης ομοιον αυτω πεποιημενον εγκαταπαιζεσθαι υπο των αγγελων παν υψηλον ορα αυτος δε βασιλευς παντων των εν τοις
Job 41 Text (Latin) An extrahere poteris leviathan hamo, et fune ligabis linguam ejus ? Numquid pones circulum in naribus ejus, aut armilla perforabis maxillam ejus ? Numquid multiplicabit ad te preces, aut loquetur tibi mollia ? Numquid feriet tecum pactum, et accipies eum servum sempiternum ? Numquid illudes ei quasi avi, aut ligabis eum ancillis tuis ? Concident eum amici ? divident illum negotiatores ? Numquid implebis sagenas pelle ejus, et gurgustium piscium capite illius ? Pone super eum manum tuam : memento belli, nec ultra addas loqui. Ecce spes ejus frustrabitur eum, et videntibus cunctis præcipitabitur. Non quasi crudelis suscitabo eum : quis enim resistere potest vultui meo ? Quis ante dedit mihi, ut reddam ei ? omnia quæ sub cælo sunt, mea sunt. Non parcam ei, et verbis potentibus, et ad deprecandum compositis. Quis revelabit faciem indumenti ejus ? et in medium oris ejus quis intrabit ? Portas vultus ejus quis aperiet ? per gyrum dentium ejus formido. Corpus illius quasi scuta fusilia, compactum squamis se prementibus. Una uni conjungitur, et ne spiraculum quidem incedit per eas. Una alteri adhærebit, et tenentes se nequaquam separabuntur. Sternutatio ejus splendor ignis, et oculi ejus ut palpebræ diluculi. De ore ejus lampades procedunt, sicut tædæ ignis accensæ. De naribus ejus procedit fumus, sicut ollæ succensæ atque ferventis. Halitus ejus prunas ardere facit, et flamma de ore ejus egreditur. In collo ejus morabitur fortitudo, et faciem ejus præcedit egestas. Membra carnium ejus cohærentia sibi : mittet contra eum fulmina et ad locum alium non ferentur. Cor ejus indurabitur tamquam lapis, et stringetur quasi malleatoris incus. Cum sublatus fuerit, timebunt angeli, et territi purgabuntur. Cum apprehenderit eum gladius, subsitere non poterit, neque hasta, neque thorax : reputabit enim quasi paleas ferrum, et quasi lignum putridum æs. Non fugabit eum vir sagittarius : in stipulam versi sunt ei lapides fundæ. Quasi stipulam æstimabit malleum, et deridebit vibrantem hastam. Sub ipso erunt radii solis, et sternet sibi aurum quasi lutum. Fervescere faciet quasi ollam profundum mare, et ponet quasi cum unguenta bulliunt. Post eum lucebit semita : æstimabit abyssum quasi senescentem. Non est super terram potestas quæ comparetur ei, qui factus est ut nullum timeret. Job 41 Text (KJV) Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee? Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants? Canst thou fill his skin with barbed iron? or his head with fish spears? Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine. I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion. Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle? Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal. One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered. By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him. The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved. His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves. The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon. He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble. Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear. Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire. He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear. He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.
