Mary (mother of Jesus)

Synopsis: Mary, the wife of Joseph, a carpenter from Nazareth, was the mother of Jesus. She conceived Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit, before marrying and having sexual relationships with her husband. She was present when Jesus was crucified and saw him risen. The Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic specially venerate Mary and she is often referred to as the Virgin Mary. There are some teachings in the Roman Catholic church regarding Mary that are denied in the Protestant churches.

Mary, from Nazareth in Galilee, was the mother of Jesus of Nazareth. According to the canonical Christian scriptures she conceived Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit at a time when she was already the betrothed wife of Joseph of the House of David, but he had not yet taken her home, which means that they had not yet celebrated the concluding wedding rite prior to which a couple are not permitted to live together and have conjugal relations. Mary was present when Jesus was crucified and saw him risen. The Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic specially venerate her; and she is often referred to as the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are particularly some very controversial teachings in the Roman Catholic church regarding Mary that are denied in the Protestant churches.
