Proverbs 26 Text (WEB) Like snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool. Like a fluttering sparrow, like a darting swallow, so the undeserved curse doesn't come to rest. A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools! Don't answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes. One who sends a message by the hand of a fool is cutting off feet and drinking violence. Like the legs of the lame that hang loose: so is a parable in the mouth of fools. As one who binds a stone in a sling, so is he who gives honor to a fool. Like a thornbush that goes into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools. As an archer who wounds all, so is he who hires a fool or he who hires those who pass by. As a dog that returns to his vomit, so is a fool who repeats his folly. Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion roams the streets!" As the door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed. The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth. The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer with discretion. Like one who grabs a dog's ears is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own. Like a madman who shoots torches, arrows, and death, is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, "Am I not joking?" For lack of wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, a quarrel dies down. As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man to kindling strife. The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, they go down into the innermost parts. Like silver dross on an earthen vessel are the lips of a fervent one with an evil heart. A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart. When his speech is charming, don't believe him; for there are seven abominations in his heart. His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it. Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him. A lying tongue hates those it hurts; and a flattering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 26 Text (Hebrew) כשלג בקיץ וכמטר בקציר כן לא־נאוה לכסיל כבוד׃ כצפור לנוד כדרור לעוף כן קללת חנם תבא׃ שוט לסוס מתג לחמור ושבט לגו כסילים׃ אל־תען כסיל כאולתו פן־תשוה־לו גם־אתה׃ ענה כסיל כאולתו פן־יהיה חכם בעיניו׃ מקצה רגלים חמס שתה שלח דברים ביד־כסיל׃ דליו שקימ מפסח ומשל בפי כסילים׃ כצרור אבן במרגמה כן־נותן לכסיל כבוד׃ חוח עלה ביד־שכור ומשל בפי כסילים׃ רב מחולל־כל ושכר כסיל ושכר עברים׃ ככלב שב על־קאו כסיל שונה באולתו׃ ראית איש חכם בעיניו תקוה לכסיל ממנו׃ אמר עצל שחל בדרך ארי בין הרחבות׃ הדלת תסוב על־צירה ועצל על־מטתו׃ טמן עצל ידו בצלחת נלאה להשיבה אל־פיו׃ חכם עצל בעיניו משבעה משיבי טעם׃ מחזיק באזני־כלב עבר מתעבר על־ריב לא־לו׃ כמתלהלה הירה זקים חצים ומות׃ כן־איש רמה את־רעהו ואמר הלא־משחק אני׃ באפס עצים תכבה־אש ובאין נרגן ישתק מדון׃ פחם לגחלים ועצים לאש ואיש לחרחר־ריב׃ ף דברי נרגן כמתלהמים והם ירדו חדרי־בטן׃ כסף סיגים מצפה על־חרש שפתים דלקים ולב־רע׃ ינכר שונא ובקרבו ישית מרמה׃ כי־יחןן קולו אל־תאמן־בו כי שבע תועבות בלבו׃ תכסה שנאה במשאון תגלה רעתו בקהל׃ כרה־שחת בה יפל וגלל אבן אליו תשוב׃ לשון־שקר ישנא דכיו ופה חלק יעשה מדחה׃
Proverbs 26 Text (Greek) ωσπερ δροσος εν αμητω και ωσπερ υετος εν θερει ουτως ουκ εστιν αφρονι ωσπερ ορνεα πεταται και στρουθοι ουτως αρα ματαια ουκ επελευσεται ωσπερ μαστιξ ιππω και κεντρον ονω ουτως ραβδος εθνει μη αποκρινου αφρονι προς την εκεινου αφροσυνην ινα μη ομοιος γενη αλλα αποκρινου αφρονι κατα την αφροσυνην αυτου ινα μη φαινηται σοφος παρ' εκ των εαυτου ποδων ονειδος πιεται ο αποστειλας δι' αγγελου αφρονος αφελου πορειαν σκελων και παροιμιαν εκ στοματος ος αποδεσμευει λιθον εν σφενδονη ομοιος εστιν τω διδοντι αφρονι ακανθαι φυονται εν χειρι του μεθυσου δουλεια δε εν χειρι των πολλα χειμαζεται πασα σαρξ αφρονων συντριβεται γαρ η εκστασις ωσπερ κυων οταν επελθη επι τον εαυτου εμετον και μισητος γενηται ουτως αφρων τη εαυτου κακια αναστρεψας επι την εαυτου ειδον ανδρα δοξαντα παρ' εαυτω σοφον ειναι ελπιδα μεντοι εσχεν μαλλον αφρων λεγει οκνηρος αποστελλομενος εις οδον λεων εν ταις ωσπερ θυρα στρεφεται επι του στροφιγγος ουτως οκνηρος επι της κλινης κρυψας οκνηρος την χειρα εν τω κολπω αυτου ου δυνησεται επενεγκειν επι το σοφωτερος εαυτω οκνηρος φαινεται του εν πλησμονη αποκομιζοντος ωσπερ ο κρατων κερκου κυνος ουτως ο προεστως αλλοτριας ωσπερ οι ιωμενοι προβαλλουσιν λογους εις ανθρωπους ο δε απαντησας τω λογω πρωτος ουτως παντες οι ενεδρευοντες τους εαυτων φιλους οταν δε φωραθωσιν λεγουσιν οτι παιζων εν πολλοις ξυλοις θαλλει πυρ οπου δε ουκ εστιν διθυμος ησυχαζει εσχαρα ανθραξιν και ξυλα πυρι ανηρ δε λοιδορος εις ταραχην λογοι κερκωπων μαλακοι ουτοι δε τυπτουσιν εις ταμιεια αργυριον διδομενον μετα δολου ωσπερ οστρακον ηγητεον χειλη λεια καρδιαν καλυπτει χειλεσιν παντα επινευει αποκλαιομενος εχθρος εν δε τη καρδια τεκταινεται εαν σου δεηται ο εχθρος μεγαλη τη φωνη μη πεισθης επτα γαρ εισιν πονηριαι εν τη ψυχη ο κρυπτων εχθραν συνιστησιν δολον εκκαλυπτει δε τας εαυτου αμαρτιας ευγνωστος εν ο ορυσσων βοθρον τω πλησιον εμπεσειται εις αυτον ο δε κυλιων λιθον εφ' εαυτον γλωσσα ψευδης μισει αληθειαν στομα δε αστεγον ποιει
Proverbs 26 Text (Latin) Quomodo nix in æstate, et pluviæ in messe, sic indecens est stulto gloria. Sicut avis ad alia transvolans et passer quolibet vadens, sic maledictum frustra prolatum in quempiam superveniet. Flagellum equo, et camus asino, et virga in dorso imprudentium. Ne respondeas stulto juxta stultitiam suam, ne efficiaris ei similis. Responde stulto juxta stultitiam suam, ne sibi sapiens esse videatur. Claudus pedibus, et iniquitatem bibens, qui mittit verba per nuntium stultum. Quomodo pulchras frustra habet claudus tibias, sic indecens est in ore stultorum parabola. Sicut qui mittit lapidem in acervum Mercurii, ita qui tribuit insipienti honorem. Quomodo si spina nascatur in manu temulenti, sic parabola in ore stultorum. Judicium determinat causas, et qui imponit stulto silentium iras mitigat. Sicut canis qui revertitur ad vomitum suum, sic imprudens qui iterat stultitiam suam. Vidisti hominem sapientem sibi videri ? magis illo spem habebit insipiens. Dicit piger : Leo est in via, et leæna in itineribus. Sicut ostium vertitur in cardine suo, ita piger in lectulo suo. Abscondit piger manum sub ascela sua, et laborat si ad os suum eam converterit. Sapientior sibi piger videtur septem viris loquentibus sententias. Sicut qui apprehendit auribus canem, sic qui transit impatiens et commiscetur rixæ alterius. Sicut noxius est qui mittit sagittas et lanceas in mortem, ita vir fraudulenter nocet amico suo, et cum fuerit deprehensus dicit : Ludens feci. Cum defecerint ligna extinguetur ignis, et susurrone subtracto, jurgia conquiescent. Sicut carbones ad prunas, et ligna ad ignem, sic homo iracundus suscitat rixas. Verba susurronis quasi simplicia, et ipsa perveniunt ad intima ventris. Quomodo si argento sordido ornare velis vas fictile, sic labia tumentia cum pessimo corde sociata. Labiis suis intelligitur inimicus, cum in corde tractaverit dolos. Quando submiserit vocem suam, ne credideris ei, quoniam septem nequitiæ sunt in corde illius. Qui operit odium fraudulenter, revelabitur malitia ejus in consilio. Qui fodit foveam incidet in eam, et qui volvit lapidem, revertetur ad eum. Lingua fallax non amat veritatem, et os lubricum operatur ruinas.
Proverbs 26 Text (KJV) As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool. As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come. A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back. Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage. The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools. As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool. As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools. The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors. As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason. He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears. As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death, So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport? Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross. He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation. Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
