The Authorised Version (KJV) says that Mary That verb is the instance "cometherchetai" to the tomb. That seems, to a modern readerwhich has morphology v-pni-3s, to imply that she of the word-stem which has just arrived thereStrong's number 2064. In that case there seems to be (The abbreviation v-pni-3s means a contradiction with Matthew and Markverb, who indicate that the women arrived at daybreakpresent tense, middle or passive deponent voice, indicative, when it would probably be no longer darkthird person singular.)
The NIV translates the verb in At John 2016:1 as 25, exactly the same instance 2064 v-pni-3s is translated by "wentis coming". In that caseby numerous versions, it was dark while Mary was on her way to the tombincluding NIV, ESV, NKJV, NASB, but light when she arrived thereWeymouth.
Would it be better to read the verb as The word "erchetai"is coming"? That would not mean that Mary had arrived at listed 38 times in the tomb yetGospel of John, so thatand, as with the NIV translationof those, there would not be the inconsistency with Matthew and MarkNASB translates 11 occurrences as "is coming".
There are two items of evidence suggesting that "is coming" is a reasonable translation at So apparently the verse John 20:1. They are:-# The Greek word is "erchetai". It can could properly be described as Strong's number 2064 and morphology v-pni-3s. Exactly the same Greek word, occurring at John 16:25, is translated as "Mary Magdalene is coming" in many versions, for example NIV, ESV, NKJV, NASB, Weymouth.# That word "erchetai" occurs 38 times in John's Gospel. In . unto the NASB it is translated sepulchre"is coming" in 11 of those, according to the Sainte Bible website, which mentions Englishman's Concordance.
