- It happened after this, that David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?" Yahweh said to him, "Go up." David said, "Where shall I go up?" He said, "To Hebron."
- So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.
- David brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household. They lived in the cities of Hebron.
- The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, saying, "The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul."
- David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, "Blessed are you by Yahweh, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.
- Now may Yahweh show loving kindness and truth to you. I also will reward you for this kindness, because you have done this thing.
- Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them."
- Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's army, had taken Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
- and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
- Ishbosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
- The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
- Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
- Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
- Abner said to Joab, "Please let the young men arise and play before us!" Joab said, "Let them arise!"
- Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
- They caught everyone his fellow by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: therefore that place was called Helkath Hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
- The battle was very severe that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
- The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle.
- Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he didn't turn to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
- Then Abner looked behind him, and said, "Is it you, Asahel?" He answered, "It is I."
- Abner said to him, "Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and grab one of the young men, and take his armor." But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.
- Abner said again to Asahel, "Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then should I hold up my face to Joab your brother?"
- However he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner with the back end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place. It happened, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
- But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
- The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.
- Then Abner called to Joab, and said, "Shall the sword devour forever? Don't you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long shall it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?"
- Joab said, "As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely then in the morning the people would have gone away, and not each followed his brother."
- So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
- Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.
- Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel.
- But the servants of David had struck of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, [so that] three hundred sixty men died.
- They took up Asahel, and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.

- ויהי אחרי־כן וישאל דוד ביהוה לאמר האעלה באחת ערי יהודה ויאמר יהוה אליו עלה ויאמר דוד אנה אעלה ויאמר חברנה׃
- ויעל שם דוד וגם שתי נשיו אחינעם היזרעלית ואביגיל אשת נבל הכרמלי׃
- ואנשיו אשר־עמו העלה דוד איש וביתו וישבו בערי חברון׃
- ויבאו אנשי יהודה וימשחו־שם את־דוד למלך על־בית יהודה ויגדו לדוד לאמר אנשי יביש גלעד אשר קברו את־שאול׃ ס
- וישלח דוד מלאכים אל־אנשי יביש גלעד ויאמר אליהם ברכים אתם ליהוה אשר עשיתם החסד הזה עם־אדניכם עם־שאול ותקברו אתו׃
- ועתה יעש־יהוה עםכם חסד ואמת וגם אנכי אעשה אתכם הטובה הזאת אשר עשיתם הדבר הזה׃
- ועתה תחזקנה ידיכם והיו לבני־חיל כי־מת אדניכם שאול וגם־אתי משחו בית־יהודה למלך עליהם׃ ף
- ואבנר בן־נר שר־צבא אשר לשאול לקח את־איש בשת בן־שאול ויעברהו מחנים׃
- וימלכהו אל־הגלעד ואל־האשורי ואל־יזרעאל ועל־אפרים ועל־בנימן ועל־ישראל כלה׃ ף
- בן־ארבעים שנה איש־בשת בן־שאול במלכו על־ישראל ושתים שנים מלך אך בית יהודה היו אחרי דוד׃
- ויהי מספר הימים אשר היה דוד מלך בחברון על־בית יהודה שבע שנים וששה חדשים׃ ס
- ויצא אבנר בן־נר ועבדי איש־בשת בן־שאול ממחנים גבעונה׃
- ויואב בן־צרויה ועבדי דוד יצאו ויפגשום על־ברכת גבעון יחדו וישבו אלה על־הברכה מזה ואלה על־הברכה מזה׃
- ויאמר אבנר אל־יואב יקומו נא הנערים וישחקו לפנינו ויאמר יואב יקמו׃
- ויקמו ויעברו במספר שנים עשר לבנימן ולאיש בשת בן־שאול ושנים עשר מעבדי דוד׃
- ויחזקו איש בראש רעהו וחרבו בצד רעהו ויפלו יחדו ויקרא למקום ההוא חלקת הצרים אשר בגבעון׃
- ותהי המלחמה קשה עד־מאד ביום ההוא וינגף אבנר ואנשי ישראל לפני עבדי דוד׃
- ויהיו־שם שלשה בני צרויה יואב ואבישי ועשהאל ועשהאל קל ברגליו כאחד הצבים אשר בשדה׃
- וירדף עשהאל אחרי אבנר ולא־נטה ללכת על־הימין ועל־השמאול מאחרי אבנר׃
- ויפן אבנר אחריו ויאמר האתה זה עשהאל ויאמר אנכי׃
- ויאמר לו אבנר נטה לך על־ימינך או על־שמאלך ואחז לך אחד מהנערים וקח־לך את־חלצתו ולא־אבה עשהאל לסור מאחריו׃
- ויסף עוד אבנר לאמר אל־עשהאל סור לך מאחרי למה אככה ארצה ואיך אשא פני אל־יואב אחיך׃
- וימאן לסור ויכהו אבנר באחרי החנית אל־החמש ותצא החנית מאחריו ויפל־שם וימת ויהי כל־הבא אל־המקום אשר־נפל שם עשהאל וימת ויעמדו׃
- וירדפו יואב ואבישי אחרי אבנר והשמש באה והמה באו עד־גבעת אמה אשר על־פני־גיח דרך מדבר גבעון׃
- ויתקבצו בני־בנימן אחרי אבנר ויהיו לאגדה אחת ויעמדו על ראש־גבעה אחת׃
- ויקרא אבנר אל־יואב ויאמר הלנצח תאכל חרב הלוא ידעתה כי־מרה תהיה באחרונה ועד־מתי לא־תאמר לעם לשוב מאחרי אחיהם׃
- ויאמר יואב חי האלהים כי לולא דברת כי אז מהבקר נעלה העם איש מאחרי אחיו׃
- ויתקע יואב בשופר ויעמדו כל־העם ולא־ירדפו עוד אחרי ישראל ולא־יספו עוד להלחם׃
- ואבנר ואנשיו הלכו בערבה כל הלילה ההוא ויעברו את־הירדן וילכו כל־הבתרון ויבאו מחנים׃
- ויואב שב מאחרי אבנר ויקבץ את־כל־העם ויפקדו מעבדי דוד תשעה־עשר איש ועשה־אל׃
- ועבדי דוד הכו מבנימן ובאנשי אבנר שלש־מאות וששים איש מתו׃
- וישאו את־עשהאל ויקברהו בקבר אביו אשר בית לחם וילכו כל־הלילה יואב ואנשיו ויאר להם בחברון׃

- Igitur post hæc consuluit David Dominum, dicens : Num ascendam in unam de civitatibus Juda ? Et ait Dominus ad eum : Ascende. Dixitque David : Quo ascendam ? Et respondit ei : In Hebron.
- Ascendit ergo David, et duæ uxores ejus, Achinoam Jezraëlites, et Abigail uxor Nabal Carmeli :
- sed et viros, qui erant cum eo, duxit David singulos cum domo sua : et manserunt in oppidis Hebron.
- Veneruntque viri Juda, et unxerunt ibi David, ut regnaret super domum Juda. Et nuntiatum est David, quod viri Jabes Galaad sepelissent Saul.
- Misit ergo David nuntios ad viros Jabes Galaad, dixitque ad eos : Benedicti vos Domino, qui fecistis misericordiam hanc cum domino vestro Saul, et sepelistis eum.
- Et nunc retribuet vobis quidem Dominus misericordiam et veritatem : sed et ego reddam gratiam, eo quod fecistis verbum istud.
- Confortentur manus vestræ, et estote filii fortitudinis : licet enim mortuus sit dominus vester Saul, tamen me unxit domus Juda in regem sibi.
- Abner autem filius Ner princeps exercitus Saul, tulit Isboseth filium Saul, et circumduxit eum per castra,
- regemque constituit super Galaad, et super Gessuri, et super Jezraël, et super Ephraim, et super Benjamin, et super Israël universum.
- Quadraginta annorum erat Isboseth filius Saul cum regnare cœpisset super Israël, et duobus annis regnavit : sola autem domus Juda sequebatur David.
- Et fuit numerus dierum, quos commoratus est David, imperans in Hebron super domum Juda, septem annorum, et sex mensium.
- Egressusque est Abner filius Ner, et pueri Isboseth filii Saul, de castris in Gabaon.
- Porro Joab filius Sarviæ, et pueri David egressi sunt, et occurrerunt eis juxta piscinam Gabaon. Et cum in unum convenissent, e regione sederunt : hi ex una parte piscinæ, et illi ex altera.
- Dixitque Abner ad Joab : Surgant pueri et ludant coram nobis. Et respondit Joab : Surgant.
- Surrexerunt ergo, et transierunt numero duodecim de Benjamin, ex parte Isboseth filii Saul, et duodecim de pueris David.
- Apprehensoque unusquisque capite comparis sui, defixit gladium in latus contrarii, et ceciderunt simul : vocatumque est nomen loci illius : Ager robustorum, in Gabaon.
- Et ortum est bellum durum satis in die illa : fugatusque est Abner, et viri Israël a pueris David.
- Erant autem ibi tres filii Sarviæ, Joab, et Abisai, et Asaël : porro Asaël cursor velocissimus fuit, quasi unus de capreis quæ morantur in silvis.
- Persequebatur autem Asaël Abner, et non declinavit ad dextram neque ad sinistram omittens persequi Abner.
- Respexit itaque Abner post tergum suum, et ait : Tune es Asaël ? Qui respondit : Ego sum.
- Dixitque ei Abner : Vade ad dexteram, sive ad sinistram et apprehende unum de adolescentibus, et tolle tibi spolia ejus. Noluit autem Asaël omittere quin urgeret eum.
- Rursumque locutus est Abner ad Asaël : Recede, noli me sequi, ne compellar confodere te in terram, et levare non potero faciem meam ad Joab fratrem tuum.
- Qui audire contempsit, et noluit declinare : percussit ergo eum Abner aversa hasta in inguine, et transfodit, et mortuus est in eodem loco : omnesque qui transibant per locum illum, in quo ceciderat Asaël, et mortuus erat, subsistebant.

- And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
