  1. "Call now; is there any who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn?
  2. For resentment kills the foolish man, and jealousy kills the simple.
  3. I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
  4. His children are far from safety. They are crushed in the gate. Neither is there any to deliver them,
  5. whose harvest the hungry eats up, and take it even out of the thorns. The snare gapes for their substance.
  6. For affliction doesn't come forth from the dust, neither does trouble spring out of the ground;
  7. but man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
  8. "But as for me, I would seek God. I would commit my cause to God,
  9. who does great things that can't be fathomed, marvelous things without number;
  10. who gives rain on the earth, and sends waters on the fields;
  11. so that he sets up on high those who are low, those who mourn are exalted to safety.
  12. He frustrates the devices of the crafty, So that their hands can't perform their enterprise.
  13. He takes the wise in their own craftiness; the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.
  14. They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope at noonday as in the night.
  15. But he saves from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty.
  16. So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth.
  17. "Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.
  18. For he wounds, and binds up. He injures, and his hands make whole.
  19. He will deliver you in six troubles; yes, in seven no evil shall touch you.
  20. In famine he will redeem you from death; in war, from the power of the sword.
  21. You shall be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, neither shall you be afraid of destruction when it comes.
  22. At destruction and famine you shall laugh, neither shall you be afraid of the animals of the earth.
  23. For you shall be allied with the stones of the field. The animals of the field shall be at peace with you.
  24. You shall know that your tent is in peace. You shall visit your fold, and shall miss nothing.
  25. You shall know also that your seed shall be great, Your offspring as the grass of the earth.
  26. You shall come to your grave in a full age, like a shock of grain comes in its season.
  27. Look this, we have searched it, so it is. Hear it, and know it for your good."

  1. קרא־נא היש עונך ואל־מי מקדשימ תפנה׃
  2. כי־לאויל יהרג־כעש ופתה תמית קנאה׃
  3. אני־ראיתי אויל משריש ואקוב נוהו פתאם׃
  4. ירחקו בניו מישע וידכאו בשער ואין מציל׃
  5. אשר קצירו רעב יאכל ואל־מצנים יקחהו ושאף צמים חילם׃
  6. כי לא־יצא מעפר און ומאדמה לא־יצמח עמל׃
  7. כי־אדם לעמל יולד ובני־רשף יגביהו עוף׃
  8. אולם אני אדרש אל־אל ואל־אלהים אשים דברתי׃
  9. עשה גדלות ואין חקר נפלאות עד־אין מספר׃
  10. הנתן מטר על־פני־ארץ ושלח מים על־פני חוצות׃
  11. לשום שפלים למרום וקדרים שגבו ישע׃
  12. מפר מחשבות ערומים ולא־תעשינה ידיהם תושיה׃
  13. לכד חכמים בערםם ועצת נפתלים נמהרה׃
  14. יוםם יפגשו־חשך וכלילה ימששו בצהרים׃
  15. וישע מחרב מפיהם ומיד חזק אביון׃
  16. ותהי לדל תקוה ועלתה קפצה פיה׃
  17. הנה אשרי אנוש יוכחנו אלוה ומוסר שדי אל־תמאס׃
  18. כי הוא יכאיב ויחבש ימחץ תרפינה׃
  19. בשש צרות יצילך ובשבע לא־יגע בך רע׃
  20. ברעב פדך ממות ובמלחמה מידי חרב׃
  21. בשוט לשון תחבא ולא־תירא משד כי יבוא׃
  22. לשד ולכפן תשחק ומחית הארץ אל־תירא׃
  23. כי עם־אבני השדה בריתך וחית השדה השלמה־לך׃
  24. וידעת כי־שלום אהלך ופקדת נוך ולא תחטא׃
  25. וידעת כי־רב זרעך וצאצאיך כעשב הארץ׃
  26. תבוא בכלח אלי־קבר כעלות גדיש בעתו׃
  27. הנה־זאת חקרנוה כן־היא שמענה ואתה דע־לך׃ ף

  1. επικαλεσαι δε ει τις σοι υπακουσεται η ει τινα αγγελων αγιων
  2. και γαρ αφρονα αναιρει οργη πεπλανημενον δε θανατοι
  3. εγω δε εωρακα αφρονας ριζαν βαλλοντας αλλ' ευθεως εβρωθη αυτων η
  4. πορρω γενοιντο οι υιοι αυτων απο σωτηριας κολαβρισθειησαν δε επι θυραις ησσονων και ουκ εσται ο
  5. α γαρ εκεινοι συνηγαγον δικαιοι εδονται αυτοι δε εκ κακων ουκ εξαιρετοι εσονται εκσιφωνισθειη αυτων η
  6. ου γαρ μη εξελθη εκ της γης κοπος ουδε εξ ορεων αναβλαστησει
  7. αλλα ανθρωπος γενναται κοπω νεοσσοι δε γυπος τα υψηλα
  8. ου μην δε αλλα εγω δεηθησομαι κυριου κυριον δε τον παντων δεσποτην
  9. τον ποιουντα μεγαλα και ανεξιχνιαστα ενδοξα τε και εξαισια ων ουκ εστιν
  10. τον διδοντα υετον επι την γην αποστελλοντα υδωρ επι την υπ'
  11. τον ποιουντα ταπεινους εις υψος και απολωλοτας
  12. διαλλασσοντα βουλας πανουργων και ου μη ποιησουσιν αι χειρες αυτων
  13. ο καταλαμβανων σοφους εν τη φρονησει βουλην δε πολυπλοκων
  14. ημερας συναντησεται αυτοις σκοτος το δε μεσημβρινον ψηλαφησαισαν ισα
  15. απολοιντο δε εν πολεμω αδυνατος δε εξελθοι εκ χειρος
  16. ειη δε αδυνατω ελπις αδικου δε στομα
  17. μακαριος δε ανθρωπος ον ηλεγξεν ο κυριος νουθετημα δε παντοκρατορος μη
  18. αυτος γαρ αλγειν ποιει και παλιν αποκαθιστησιν επαισεν και αι χειρες αυτου
  19. εξακις εξ αναγκων σε εξελειται εν δε τω εβδομω ου μη αψηται σου
  20. εν λιμω ρυσεται σε εκ θανατου εν πολεμω δε εκ χειρος σιδηρου λυσει
  21. απο μαστιγος γλωσσης σε κρυψει και ου μη φοβηθης απο κακων
  22. αδικων και ανομων καταγελαση απο δε θηριων αγριων ου μη
  23. θηρες γαρ αγριοι ειρηνευσουσιν
  24. ειτα γνωση οτι ειρηνευσει σου ο οικος η δε διαιτα της σκηνης σου ου μη
  25. γνωση δε οτι πολυ το σπερμα σου τα δε τεκνα σου εσται ωσπερ το παμβοτανον του

  1. Voca ergo, si est qui tibi respondeat, et ad aliquem sanctorum convertere.
  2. Vere stultum interficit iracundia, et parvulum occidit invidia.
  3. Ego vidi stultum firma radice ; et maledixi pulchritudini ejus statim.
  4. Longe fient filii ejus a salute, et conterentur in porta, et non erit qui eruat.
  5. Cujus messem famelicus comedet, et ipsum rapiet armatus, et bibent sitientes divitias ejus.
  6. Nihil in terra sine causa fit, et de humo non oritur dolor.
  7. Homo nascitur ad laborem, et avis ad volatum.
  8. Quam ob rem ego deprecabor Dominum, et ad Deum ponam eloquium meum,
  9. qui facit magna et inscrutabilia, et mirabilia absque numero ;
  10. qui dat pluviam super faciem terræ, et irrigat aquis universa ;
  11. qui ponit humiles in sublime, et mœrentes erigit sospitate ;
  12. qui dissipat cogitationes malignorum, ne possint implere manus eorum quod cœperant ;
  13. qui apprehendit sapientes in astutia eorum, et consilium pravorum dissipat.
  14. Per diem incurrent tenebras, et quasi in nocte, sic palpabunt in meridie.
  15. Porro salvum faciet egenum a gladio oris eorum, et de manu violenti pauperem.
  16. Et erit egeno spes ; iniquitas autem contrahet os suum.
  17. Beatus homo qui corripitur a Deo. Increpationem ergo Domini ne reprobes ;
  18. quia ipse vulnerat, et medetur ; percutit, et manus ejus sanabunt.
  19. In sex tribulationibus liberabit te, et in septima non tangent te malum.
  20. In fame eruet te de morte, et in bello de manu gladii.
  21. A flagello linguæ absconderis, et non timebis calamitatem cum venerit.
  22. In vastitate et fame ridebis, et bestias terræ non formidabis.
  23. Sed cum lapidibus regionum pactum tuum, et bestiæ terræ pacificæ erunt tibi.
  24. Et scies quod pacem habeat tabernaculum tuum ; et visitans speciem tuam, non peccabis.
  25. Scies quoque quoniam multiplex erit semen tuum, et progenies tua quasi herba terræ.
  26. Ingredieris in abundantia sepulchrum, sicut infertur acervus tritici in tempore suo.

  2. For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.
  3. I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
  4. His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.
  5. Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.
  6. Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
  7. Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
  8. I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:
  9. Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:
  10. Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:
  11. To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.
  12. He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.
  13. He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.
  14. They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

  25. Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.
  26. Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.
  27. Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.
