The term "Year of Three Popes" is used to apply to any year of which three separate [[Pope Index|popes]] reigned during a single year.

The most recent 'year of three popes' was 1978, in which [[Pope Paul VI]] ruled until August, [[Pope John Paul I]] ruled from August until September, and [[Pope John Paul II]] reigned starting in October and 1978 finished with him as the Pope.
