At its centre, however, baptism belongs to the biblical story of salvation. It points to God's cleansing of sin, the believer's union with the death and resurrection of Jesus, the gift of new life, and a public identification with Christ and his people. As the gospel moved from Jerusalem into the nations in Acts, baptism repeatedly accompanied the response to the message of Jesus, fulfilling his command to make disciples and baptise them "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" ([[Matthew 28:19]]).
