The RSV was used by all the English speaking universities of the world until the politically correct "neutered" NRSV flopped onto the scene in 1989. It has been widely accepted by Orthodox, Catholics, Protestants and scholarly evangelicals.

It is the version you should be citing if you are writing any form of serious academic thesis. It is not only the most accurate version of the Scriptures available in English but also the most majestic in its language. It is very similar in style to the New King James Version which is hardly surprising considering their mutual pedigree.

The best version of the RSV currently available is the Second Catholic Edition published in 2006. This version has amended "young woman" to "virgin" in Isaiah 7 in accordance with the Nova Vulgata. All archaic language has been removed. This translation is truly magnificent.
