The ninth chapter of the [[Book of Isaiah]] gives the people of Israel hope for the future, painting a picture of a future of justice under a just and ideal king. The chapter, written around 700 prior to Christ, ultimately finds its fulfillment in [[Jesus]].
 
The prophet Isaiah gave this message to the people of Israel and Judah within the context of two of their kings: [[Ahaz]], who led the people away from God; and [[Hezekiah]] who returned the people to God. It was also in the context of instability with war with [[Assyria]]. In Isaiah 9, a new and ideal king from the line of [[King David]] is presented. One who, like Hezekiah will worship and honour God. This king however will deliver peace and protection from surrounding armies and bring justice to the land. The passage describes the king with the well known words:
