The word Apostle is from the [[Greek]] "απόστολος" ([[apostolos]]) which means someone sent out or an emissary)"a messenger". The twelve apostles were [[Jesus]] disciples who were "sent forth" by Jesus to preach the [[Gospel]] to both Jews and Gentiles across the world.

It is the prevalent view among evangelicals today that the a special office of apostle has ceased. However, there are a number of Bible-believing churches that still operate the office of apostle.
