Originally, they were [[Roman Catholic]] endeavors to capture the [[Holy Land]] from the Muslims, but some were directed against other Europeans, such as the [[Fourth Crusade]] against Constantinople, the [[Albigensian Crusade]] against the Cathars of southern France and the Northern Crusades.
