The grandson of [[Text:EBD:Herod the Great (EBD)|Herod the Great]], and son of [[Text:EBD:Aristobulus (EBD)|Aristobulus]] and [[Text:EBD:Bernice (EBD)|Bernice]]. The Roman emperor Caligula made him [[Text:EBD:Governor (EBD)|governor]] first of the territories of [[Text:EBD:Philip (EBD)|Philip]], then of the [[Text:EBD:Tetrarch (EBD)|tetrarchy]] of [[Text:EBD:Lysanias (EBD)|Lysanias]], with the title of [[Text:EBD:King (EBD)|king]] ("king Herod"), and finally of that of [[Text:EBD:Antipas (EBD)|Antipas]], who was banished, and of [[Text:EBD:Samaria (EBD)|Samaria]] and [[Text:EBD:Judea (EBD)|Judea]]. Thus he became ruler over the whole of [[Text:EBD:Palestine (EBD)|Palestine]]. He was a persecutor of the early [[Text:EBD:Christian|Christians]]. He slew [[James (EBD)|James]], and imprisoned [[Text:EBD:Peter (EBD)|Peter]] (Acts 12:1-4). He died at [[Text:EBD:Caesarea (EBD)|Caesarea]], being "eaten of worms" (Acts 12:23), A.D. 44. (Comp.
