Jesus was a truly amazing teacher. Even by many non-Christians he is recognized for this ability. He taught about the love, forgiveness and mercy of God and challenged others to love in the same way.
During the last few years of Jesus' earthly life, he travelled the country-side of Judea and Galilee (now modern-day Israel and Palestine) teaching the local people about God. With him travelled a number of followers or disciples. 4 separate, canonical written accounts of Jesus' life and teaching of this time survive today, and are included in the Bible as the 4 Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Other accounts, such as the Gospel of Thomas, are regarded as apocryphal, that is, of questionable authenticity and truth. Not only did Jesus teach about God's love and forgiveness, he also taught about his own identity and mission, revealing himself to be the Messiah, God's Son who was ushering in a new kingdom, the Kingdom of God. One of Jesus' most significant points was that it was only through him that a person could come to know God, and that this would be through the eventual suffering and death of Jesus himself.
