Brief Timeline

1761 - Born; from a young age had a passion for overseas mission

1783 - Baptized

1789 - Works as a Baptist pastor

1792

  • Wrote his Missionary Manifesto - Great Commission applies to all Christians
  • Preached on the importance of mission from Isaiah 54
  • Formation of a society that would become the Baptist Missionary Society

1793

1799

  • Moves to the Danish colony of Serampore because of the hostility of the British East India Company which feared that missionary activity might cause tensions and riots that would hinder trade

1800

  • First Indian converted

1801

  • First Bengali New Testament printed

1808

  • Sanskrit New Testament published (plus a few others in other Indian languages)

1810

  • William Carey suggested that an International Missionary Conference meet (but this suggestion fell on deaf ears, however it can be seen as the forerunner of the ecumenical movement)

1824

  • Died
