Commentary
This verse in Revelation 3 reveals that although the church in Sardis appeared by superficial human standards to be faithful, they were in fact judged by Christ to be otherwise. The church appeared to have a good reputation, but this image did not truly represent the church.
Likewise today, the visible churches can be seen to be mixtures of the saved and false professors - mixtures of wheat and tares (Matthew 13:36-43) and of good creatures and bad (Matthew 13:47-48). The church in Sardis included those who would overcome, and those who would not not. Elsewhere in Revelation, great promises are given to those who overcome (Revelation 3:4-5
- Nevertheless you have a few names in Sardis that did not defile their garments. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.
- He who overcomes will be arrayed in white garments, and I will in no way blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
However, Revelation, and elsewhere in the Bible also warns us about those who appear to be saved, but are not, for example Matthew 7:22-23
- Many will tell me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?'
- Then I will tell them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity.'
