== Commentary ==

2 Kings describes the last few years of the northern [[Kingdom of Israel]] leading up to and including its exile. This exile occurred in [[722 BC]] after the Assyrian armies invaded and conquered the land. The people of the northern kingdom of Israel were taken captive and exiled to foreign lands, losing their ethnic and national identity forever.

The narrator of 2 Kings 17 explains that God brought about this terrible event because Israel had continually broken the Law and worshipped other foreign gods and continaully ignored God's warning about this sinful behaviour through the prophets.
