What is Christianity?
An introduction to the Christian faith
The love of God

Christianity is about God reaching out his hand in friendship to mankind. Christians believe that the whole world and everything in it was created by God. God is a personal being, a living God who is three, yet one: Father, Son and Spirit, just as we human beings have body, mind and soul! (see the Trinity).

The Bible says God created people in his image, to love him. Yet every person has rebelled against God and sinned. Yet instead of turning his back on us, God became a man, Jesus, who most scholars believe was born about the year 4 BC and lived among us. He taught a message of love throughout Palestine but public opinion turned against him and he was executed as a young man.

He died because of us - the death that we should have died. He was crucified on a cross, but he rose from the dead, and now calls us to trust him, to love him and to repent of our rebellion. If we do this, then we our relationship with God becomes restored and we will live forever with God.

Many non-Christians may think that being a Christian is about belonging to a particular church or following a certain set of rule. Most Christians however would agree that at its root, being a Christian means to be in a living relationship with Jesus.

Reformation

Martin Luther's Ninety-five Theses, traditionally dated to 31 October 1517, became an important catalyst of the Protestant Reformation.

October, 3 - Daily Devotions

October Scripture Portion: Matthew chapter 1 - Luke chapter 22 including the Gospel according to Mark.

Today we complete the reading of the Sermon on the Mount. Many people think they can be saved by following the instructions found in this sermon. They think it is easier than trying to obey the Ten Commandments. How foolish! Nobody has ever been saved by obeying any law (Galatians 2:16; 3:10,11); and the Sermon on the Mount is much more strict than Moses' Law. Under Moses' Law, if a man murdered another, he was guilty; but Jesus says that hatred in the heart is the same as murder.

As we begin our reading in Chapter 8 we move into a comparatively different section of Matthew, in which the King reveals His power. Matthew brings a group of ten miracles together to prove to his readers that Jesus Christ possesses the power of the King that the Old Testament promised the Messiah would have. We see in these verses that Christ has power over disease, as we read of the healing of the leper. Leprosy was one of the most dreaded diseases in Jesus' day. There was no cure for it; yet Jesus touched the leper, thus defiling Himself. His touch did not mean contamination for His body, but healing for the leper.

A note of interest here is that the healing was through the Word. Jesus said to the leper, "Be thou clean." It is through the Word of God today that we are cleansed. Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." Jesus gives eternal life through faith in His finished work on the cross; but it is abundant life as we live day to day through the power of His precious Holy Spirit.
