Joel Scott Hayley Osteen (born March 5, 1963) is the senior pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. He is married to Victoria Osteen, who serves as co-pastor. Joel Osteen was featured as one of Barbara Walters' "10 Most Fascinating People of 2006", and was named "Most Influential Christian in America" in 2006 by The Church Report. His second book, Become a Better You, was released in October 2007 with a first printing of three million copies.

Born in Houston, Texas, Osteen married Victoria L. Iloff on 4 April 1987. They have two children, Jonathan and Alexandra. Joel, son of John and Dodie Osteen, is one of six children. His elder siblings, Paul, Lisa, Tamara and his younger sister April, are also involved in full-time ministry. Joel's half-brother Justin, does missionary work out of New York. Joel's father, John Osteen, a former Southern Baptist pastor who became Charismatic in the late 1950s, founded Lakewood Church on Mother's Day, 1959. Osteen's father developed Lakewood into a body of approximately 6,000 members with an active television ministry, crusades, conferences, missionary support and food distribution. He died of a heart attack in 1999.

An introduction to the Christian faith
The love of God

Christianity is about God reaching out his hand in friendship to mankind. Christians believe that the whole world and everything in it was created by God. God is a personal being, a living God who is three, yet one: Father, Son and Spirit, just as we human beings have body, mind and soul! (see the Trinity).

The Bible says God created people in his image, to love him. Yet every person has rebelled against God and sinned. Yet instead of turning his back on us, God became a man, Jesus, who most scholars believe was born about the year 4 BC and lived among us. He taught a message of love throughout Palestine but public opinion turned against him and he was executed as a young man.

He died because of us - the death that we should have died. He was crucified on a cross, but he rose from the dead, and now calls us to trust him, to love him and to repent of our rebellion. If we do this, then we our relationship with God becomes restored and we will live forever with God.

Many non-Christians may think that being a Christian is about belonging to a particular church or following a certain set of rule. Most Christians however would agree that at its root, being a Christian means to be in a living relationship with Jesus.

Reformation

October, 22 - Daily Devotions

October Scripture Portion: Matthew chapter 1 - Luke chapter 22 including the Gospel according to Mark.

Chapter 2 records the birth of Jesus. The events in chapters 1 and 2 are omitted in the other Gospels, except the statement in Matthew 1:25--2:1, that Jesus was born in Bethlehem ; and the return to Galilee (Matthew 2:22,23). Little is told about Jesus' childhood; but chapter 2:41-52 records His visit to Jerusalem at the age of twelve.

The ministry of John the Baptist is recorded in Luke, chapter 3. In the 21st and 22nd verses we are given the baptism of Jesus. In the 22nd verse we see the Trinity presented vividly. As Jesus came up out of the water, the Holy Ghost, in the form of a dove, descended upon Him, and the voice from heaven said, "Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased." God is a Trinity, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. There are three distinct persons, yet they are all one. Today, as in times past, the deity of Christ has been questioned by many religionists. You notice I used the Word religionist rather than Christ. For a person to truly be born again he must believe that Jesus is God. If He were not God then He would not be sinless and could not be a sacrifice for the sins of the world. Because He is God, He had innocent blood, and that innocent blood was shed on the cross to pay for all the sins of mankind in all generations. That blood, applied to the hearts of men, forgives them of their sins. Thank God for His wonderful gift of salvation through His Son Jesus, "Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.".
